Teenage Cancer

The local Rotary organisation in the borough is using money raised by youngsters visiting Father Christmas to help other young people in the area.
More than £1,500 was raised at Park View shopping centre in Whitley Bay in conjunction with the Rotary Club of Whitley Bay from the visits to Santa and his team at the end of last year.
All the money raised on the visits will go to local charities and good causes and the first benefit is the Teenage Cancer Trust Unit at the Royal Victoria Hospital in Newcastle.
Rotary Club president Richard Hart said, "For many years we have been supporting the Macmillan Cancer Research Team to which our club has donated in excess of £7,000 After a recent meeting we all agreed that we should also support local teenagers who are suffering from this dreadful disease."
Richard added, "The teenagers receive no government funding or support for their illness other than grants and donations similar to ours, so it’s important to us all, to help where we can."
In addition to the Teenage Cancer Unit based at the RVI, the club is also going to back the baby support unit Tiny Lives and St Oswald’s Childrens hospice.
